Healthcare organizations are awash with data, but many systems have been deployed without strategic data security planning. As a result, Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) frequently have limited authority, sparse staffing and tight budgets, according to a new research study by HIMSS Analytics on behalf of Symantec Corporation.

Key findings include:

  • Most organizations conduct IT security risk assessments only once a year, leaving them more vulnerable to the latest threats.
  • With only occasional interactions with top-level leadership, there is a lack of urgency and understanding to see security as more than just a technical issue, but rather a business issue.
  • Medical device security is only in the planning stages at many organizations, making them an attractive cybercrime target.
